Golden Square Freedom Park

The Golden Square Freedom Park project was launched on July 26th, 2021. I am one of six artists that were commissioned to create artwork for the back of some park benches. This page was created to explore and document the entire process of the project. Below you will find the final artwork created and used, the progress shots of the artwork, the concept for the imagery used, and the finalized park benches.

THE GREAT ACCRETION

… Nothing happens quite by chance. It's a question of accretion of information and experience - Jonas Salk

The Great Accretion is a piece that shows the general progression of one person's Barbadian experience. The piece consists of three figures that are representative of their own respective paths but with that being said they are also a reflection of what came before them, they are “The Great Accretion”.

Figure #1 - She is a woman in despair yet she has hope for the future, even though she knows she won't live to see it. She is trapped in time, forever to be remembered. Her lessons are constant and ongoing. She is “The Foremother”.

Figure #2 - She is the one who paved the way. The one who stopped making apologies and started making plans. She has started to bring to life the hopes of her Foremother. She is “The Visionary”.

Figure #3 - She sits tall and regal, yet relaxed and confident she is the product of those before her. She has been instilled with the confidence to chart her own path outside of societal norms and refuses to make an apology for it. She is “The Accretia”.
